statement

“Spontaneous images of sculptural beings arrive behind closed eyes through meditation. I let these images surface naturally, but I believe the colors, textures and shapes are drawn from a visual archive influenced by many personal interests, including human anatomy, flora and fauna, strange sea life and growths from the forest floor. Spiritual abstraction, theatrical prop design and construction, surrealist film, and intuitive geometry intrigue me.

“I inspect and experiment with these “spirit forms” until they reach a state where they are ready to be created physically.

“My background as an artist was always in figurative realism until 2020 when I felt compelled to abandon the figure and explore abstraction. Because my images now come from within, I believe I still represent the body, or at least the “self,” but in spirit form – a portrait of internal worlds, a gesture of vibrations.

“The same systems inform me when I build my sculptures as when I draw or paint the figure. There is an internal skeleton or armature, the muscles are built with foam or other materials, the skin is PaperClay or Pal Tiya, and the color and details are various materials such as resin, leather, plaster and paint.

“The goal is to experiment and let these materials teach me what they can and can’t do and figure out the most fulfilling ways to express the original ideas.”
